There are 2 main types of mobility scooter battery.

Lead acid batteries. These are cheaper, lighter and they last longer, but they need the most maintenance. They contain a mixture of water and electrolyte which must be regularly checked and topped up. Take care not to spill the liquid as it can burn you.

Gel cell batteries. These are more expensive and they often last for a shorter time than lead acid batteries. They can't be spilled, they need no maintenance and they can be taken on planes. BHTA have advice on disabling mobility scooters for air travel.

Mobility scooter classifications

Mobility scooters are legally classed in the UK into two distinct categories.

Class 2 Mobility Scooters

These are mobility scooters suitable for using on British streets and pavements. They often have a narrow profile and a tighter turning circle. In the UK you can legally travel up to 4mph on pavements, plus anywhere you would be allowed to travel on foot if it is safe to do so. Class 2 mobility scooters do not normally have suitable lights and indicators and are therefore not allowed on public roads.

Class 3 Mobility Scooters

Class 3 mobility scooters can be used on UK public roads as well as pavements. The maximum speed limit of these mobility scooters is 4mph on the pavement and 8mph on the road. A driver/operator must be 14 years old or over to drive a class 3 mobility scooter.

IntaMobility (IntaCare Ltd) supply the public and the care industry with a wide range of battery-powered disability mobility scooters for those with leg problems, lower body weakness, for amputees and for the elderly. We supply both Class 2 and Class 3 scooters, for indoor use, for shopping, or for longer journeys.

Our pavement scooters normally travel at 4mp, but our road scooters can travel at 6-8mph. We can supply disability mobility scooters to fit all of your needs.

When thinking of buying a mobility scooter you should always keep in mind where you intend to use it, indoors or outdoors, on a hill. If it is to get you around the shops, the High Street, or if you need it to fit into a car boot then a mobility scooter that can be taken apart into easy-to-manage parts.

Several versions of mobility scooters that we sell are easy to transport and have excellent manoeuvring, making using them easy for elderly and disabled persons. But if you prefer your mobility scooter to be able to cope with long journeys then a mobility scooter with a speed of 6-8mph, with the necessary lights and indicators, may be needed.
